Solid oak has a warmth and versatility that few other materials can match. Its golden honey tones and visible grain make it naturally compatible with both warm and cool colour palettes — though some combinations work significantly better than others.

Heritage green

Dark, muted greens — think Farrow & Ball Calke Green or Fired Earth’s Forest Floor — are having a significant moment in British interiors and for good reason. They create an immediate sense of depth and calm, and the contrast with natural oak is exceptional. The richness of the green draws out the warm undertones in the timber grain, and the combination feels grounded and distinctly British.

Warm off-white

A warm off-white or soft cream is the most forgiving backdrop for oak furniture. It allows the wood to be the focal point while keeping the room light and airy. Dulux’s Timeless and Farrow & Ball’s Pointing are perennial choices. Avoid stark bright whites, which can make natural oak appear slightly orange by contrast.

Slate and pewter

Cool greys have been dominant in British interiors for over a decade, but they’re now being used with more sophistication — layered with warmer textures rather than presented as a minimalist statement. Paired with our natural lacquer oak finish, a slate or pewter wall creates an unexpectedly elegant effect.
