The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show at the NEC Birmingham is the UK’s largest event for self-builders and renovators. This March, we were there. Four days, over 39,000 visitors, and a room full of people actively spending money on their homes.
These are not casual browsers. They are people mid-project, with budgets allocated and decisions to make. It is one of the few shows where the conversation can move from introduction to order in a single afternoon.
What We Showed
We brought three beds, each making a different argument.
Our adjustable bed in deep slate-blue channel-stitched upholstery drew the most attention. Most people arrive with a fixed idea of what an adjustable bed looks like. We change that quickly.
The York solid oak bed sat alongside it. Hand-built in our Sussex workshops, it speaks for itself. Several visitors who came to discuss adjustable beds left equally interested in the oak range.
A floral upholstered bed completed the stand, aimed at those restoring period properties. The response confirmed what we already know: there is no single definition of luxury.

What We Heard
Visitors this year were well-researched. Questions were specific: motor specifications, mattress layering, lead times. People had done their homework before they arrived. They came to verify, not to browse.
The bedroom is also being taken more seriously in renovation budgets. It was once the last room allocated money, after kitchens and bathrooms. That is changing. Sleep has become a priority, and buyers are acting accordingly.
Several visitors told us the same thing in different ways: they had been let down by fast-furniture brands and wanted something that would last. We hear this often. It is why we build the way we build.
“We came looking for an adjustable bed that did not look like a hospital bed. We left with a deposit down.”

Why We Go
No photograph conveys the weight of a solid oak frame or the feel of hand-stitched upholstery. The show gives people the chance to sit on the beds, ask direct questions and speak to the people who make them.
For us it is less about sales and more about conversation. Every person who visits the stand leaves with a clearer picture of what separates a bespoke bed from a box-shifted alternative.
